Vishakhadatta has penned down the drama very well with firm and independent imagination.

Mudra-Rakshasa was different as it had broken the trend of romantic dramas. It was based on the current politics. Furthermore, as per the trend, there is no female character in this drama as women had no part in the active politics then. This drama reveals a tense political tussle between the king Chandragupta Maurya, his political guide Arya Chanakya and Amatya Rakshasa. The multi-dimensional enmesh relationship between these three is the base of this drama. Both the counselors Arya Chanakya and Amatya Rakshasa are involved in fierce competition. They have brutal hostile feelings against each other; yet they respect each other?s knowledge immensely.

Mudra-Rakshasa is based on the concept of two things; first being the ?mudra? or the seal and second is the Rakshasa; the minister of the king Chandragupta. The story unfolds the importance that both the minister Rakshasa and his seal have gained. Arya Chanakya?s intelligence and wit captivates our minds as he slowly and steadily brings the Amatya down.

या नाटकाने प्रेम रंजित नाटकांची परंपरा मोडल्याने हे अगदी वेगळेच ठरते. विशाखदत्त या लेखकाने स्वत:च्या ठाम आणि स्वतंत्र हे नाटक लिहिलेले आहे. ते चालू राजकारणावर आधारित होते. शिवाय या नाटकात एकही स्त्री पात्र नव्हते. कारण तत्कालीन राजकारणात स्त्रियांना कधीच स्थान नव्हते. एक अटीतटीचचा राजकीय संघर्ष या नाटकात रंगवलेला आहे. हा संघर्ष चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य, त्याचे गुरू आर्य चाणक्य आणि अमात्य राक्षस यांच्यामधला आहे. या तिघांमधली बहुपदरी आणि गुंतागुंतीच्यी नाती या नाटकाचा विषय आहे. आर्य चाणक्य आणि अमात्य राक्षस दोघेही एका भयावह स्पर्धेत अडकलेले आहे. त्या दोघांमध्ये पशुतुल्य अशी शत्रुत्वाची भावना आहे. तरीही त्यांना एकमेकांच्या ज्ञानाविषयी नितांत आदर आहे. मुद्राराक्षस ही कथा मुद्रा आणि चंद्रगुप्ताचा अमात्य राक्षस या दोन गोष्टीवर आधारित आहे. राक्षस आणि मुद्रा या दोन्हीचे फायदे व त्यांचे महत्व कथेतून हळूहळू उलघडत जाते. आर्य चाणक्याची त्रीव बुद्धि आणि कल्पकल्प आपले मन जिंकुन घेते. यांच्या सहाय्यानेच तो अमात्य राक्षसाला सावकाश परंतु ठामपणे खाली आणतो.
